Calexico

  • Calexico is a band from Tucson, Arizona that shares a sun-bleached border with many performers and musical styles. Comprised of two core members, Joey Burns and John Convertino, Calexico became its own entity in 1996 with the release of the Spoke LP. A wide variety of tours, performances (including the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals) and recording sessions as Calexico and with other artists (Neko Case, Victoria Williams, Richard Buckner, Iron & Wine) allowed the band the opportunity to develop as artists. Over time, Calexico has featured a revolving cast of musicians and instruments, with a core group that solidified around 'Feast of Wire', (Volker Zander, Martin Wenk, Jacob Valenuela and Paul Niehaus) The band's sonic growth can be traced through its varied releases. Two years after "Garden Ruin", Calexico has returned and is offering up "Carried To Dust", the new full-length record due September 9, 2008. This new record is a shining example of Calexico's commitment to constantly molting and redefining who they are. A continued examination of their sources of inspiration, "Carried To Dust" is the next step in Calexico's ongoing quest of moving forward while never turning its back on the past. Along with extending the collaborative bridges with other artists, "Carried To Dust" also reflects Calexico's amazing live shows, as well as underscoring the band's restraint and beauty. A remarkably well-rounded album, "Carried To Dust" showcases every aspect of Calexico's exceptional talents.

Oakley Hall

  • Oakley Hall are an enigmatic Brooklyn ensemble. Ex-Oneida member Papa Crazee gets rockabilly with a motley lot of musicians, creating psyche-rock complete with heavily distorted guitars, organs, a "loudly" amplified fiddle, and lyrics meant to get wasted to. You know it's gonna be a good old-fashioned hoedown with song titles like "Foolish Heart" and "Ridin the Dog," yet if you happened to catch these guys recently, you might notice that these days they're leaning more towards the ROCK and away from the twang. Regardless, Oakley Hall is good band that just seems to go hand-in-hand with liquor. - Oh My Rockness
