Diplo

  • Wes Pentz aka Diplo was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. Most of his childhood was spent in Florida, where his father still owns and runs a bait shop. His youth was spent discussing ‘gators with his uncle, working in pop’s store and dreaming of dinosaurs living hidden out in the swamp. As he grew up he began to channel these obsessions into music (Miami Bass being a touchstone, of course) and film.

After a brief stint at film school and a season out on the shrimp boats, the need to escape from America for a while led to some time in Japan, from where he sent the beat doodles he had been working on to Big Dada in the UK and was promptly signed. He returned to the US and moved to Philly where he and another DJ, Low Budget, began their now-legendary Hollertronix sessions. The Hollertronix mix cd, “Never Scared” followed and later in the year the lost classic “Epistemology Suite” EP became his first release for Big Dada.

“Florida” followed soon after, the debut album which he described as “based loosely on Wiliam Faulkner’s ‘Go Down Moses’ with a definite red clay shrimp and manatee dirty south feel.” Featuring vocals from Martina Topley-Bird, Vybz Cartel, PEACE, Pantera Os Danadinhos and Sandra Melody it showed the breadth of Diplo’s imagination and the depth of his influences. It was welcomed ecstatically by those who found it but is still to reach the audience it deserved.

Abe Vigoda

  • Abe Vigoda is the new LA punk secret weapon. Coming from a shattered and splattered background of No Wave, Pop, Darkness and Hope, ABE VIGODA bring forth a sound that is tempting and beautiful, yet melodic and tropical. The first proper full length comes in the name SKELETON and is a twisted joy ride through the four boys' private party. Soothing parts that remind you of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART and MY BLOODY VALENTINE, or some Punk with a haunting REGGAETON pulse that makes you move. When the record is done, a little more than thirty minutes, you are left feeling that there is something they are trying to tell you, on second listen it smacks you in the face... ABE VIGODA are here! Coming from the same team as THE SMELL champions NO AGE and MIKA MIKO, ABE VIGODA hold a DIY attitude and play all over the place whenever they can, bringing an instant vibe all their own.

Abe Vigoda have been going at it for years now, since 2004 their sound has progressed into many different styles and shapes, leaving them with a unique take on punk and its various states of attitude. Having previously released some singles, two full lengths, cassettes, etc, SKELETON captures the boys honing in on an amazing direction. You hear a bit of dream-like ambience that seams through entire songs, with a beat that drives you into their world, and vocals that are underneath the music as much as they are on top. SKELETON, sometimes is a bit like a punked up version of PAUL SIMON'S "GRACELAND" and other times like a PSYCHADELIC FURS song being played in a church with all that room sound adding to the pop hooks. It is all ABE VIGODA though, pulling and heading in paths which are familiar and also fresh. SKELETON is an instant LA Now Classic and Abe Vigoda are the new jam.

Telepathe

  • Telepathe are a fluid and process-orientated band that ebb and flow through various genres of music all the while creating their own mysterious sound. Led by Busy Ganges and Melissa Lavaudais, with an ever-rotating personnel, the group take their eerie textural music and interweave into it a rhythmic pattern that pulls the listener in. Sinister Militia is Telepathe's second release on The Social Registry, following on from last year's Farewell Forest CD EP, and it shows the band developing their sound further. Telepathe blur genres as they apply their experience in punk rock/hard core bands to the dance music algorithm. - The Free Agency
